Michael forced his body not to stiffen under her touch. He wore a mask of perfect, calculated calm. "Just stressed about the Vale merger, Ashley. It's a massive deal. It finalizes today."

"Oh, I know!" Ashley purred, sitting gracefully on the edge of his desk. "My sister Victoria says everything is ready on the Vale side. Once the merger goes through, Bennett-Vale International will dominate the global market. And then, tonight..." She flashed a brilliant, dazzling smile, tapping the velvet ring box on his desk. "Tonight is our engagement announcement at the charity gala. I've invited all the major press."

"Yes," Michael said, his voice flat, his eyes fixed on her face, searching for any flicker of guilt. There was none. She was a sociopath. "Tonight will be unforgettable, Ashley. I promise you that."

"Wonderful! I have a few more errands to run for the gala. I'll see you in the boardroom for the preliminary signing at noon?"

"I'll be there," Michael replied.

The moment the door closed behind her, Michael picked up his phone. "David. Is the forensic accounting report finalized?"

"Yes, Michael. I have the certified bank records, the confessions from the paid-off security guards, and the IP tracking reports. It’s ironclad. Ashley Vance systematically dismantled your wife's life."

"Good," Michael growled. "Send a copy to Daniel Vale’s private legal counsel. We need to ensure the merger contract contains specific clauses regarding executive misconduct. I don't want a single dime of Bennett money accidentally enriching the Vance family when this blows up."

"Consider it done."

Part 4: The Boardroom Confrontation

At 9:00 AM sharp, Sarah stood outside the penthouse boardroom of Vale International. She was clutching a thick, leather-bound folder containing the final, unredacted merger files. Her knuckles were white.

She had spent the night verifying every single line of the contract. And what she found had horrified her. Deep within the addendums, hidden under complex legal jargon, Victoria Vance had inserted a clause that diverted a significant percentage of the post-merger intellectual property rights to an offshore holding company—the very same holding company tied to Ashley Vance. It was a massive corporate embezzlement scheme disguised as a standard merger provision.

The heavy oak doors opened, and Daniel Vale’s personal assistant signaled her in.

The boardroom was vast, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the city. Daniel sat at the head of the massive mahogany table. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket from the night before; his shirtsleeves were rolled up, and his expression was intensely focused as he reviewed documents on a tablet.

"Sit down, Sarah," Daniel said without looking up, his voice commanding yet oddly reassuring.

Sarah took a seat opposite him, placing the file on the table. "Mr. Vale, before we begin the standard presentation, there is an urgent matter regarding the contract addendums that requires your immediate attention."

Daniel raised his eyes, his sharp gaze locking onto hers. "Go on."

"Over the last twelve hours, I performed a deep-dive audit on the intellectual property clauses inserted by the senior legal team—specifically, by Victoria Vance. Section 14.4 outlines a patent transfer to an entity called 'A&V Holdings.' This entity is registered in the Cayman Islands. It has no operational history, no employees, and its primary stakeholder is Ashley Vance, the fiancée of Michael Holdings’ CEO."

Sarah paused, expecting Daniel to look shocked or angry. Instead, his face remained completely unreadable.

"You found it," Daniel said quietly.

Sarah blinked. "You... you knew?"

Daniel leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers. "I suspected. Vale International didn't become a multi-billion-dollar empire by accident, Sarah. I monitor everything. But I needed someone inside the legal department who wasn't compromised to find the paper trail and verify it. Someone untainted by the Vance family's influence."

He leaned forward, his eyes burning with a strange intensity. "Last night, when I saw you standing up to Marcus Croft, I saw a woman of immense integrity. And when my security team sent me the data profile on you, it confirmed what I already knew. You are thorough, brilliant, and completely uncorruptible."

Sarah felt a flush creep up her neck, her heart doing a strange flutter. "Thank you, Mr. Vale. But if you knew, why haven't you stopped the merger?"

"Because Michael Bennett is a friend of mine," Daniel revealed, his voice darkening. "And he is currently executing a plan to destroy the woman who ruined his life. Ashley Vance didn't just try to steal from this merger, Sarah. A year ago, she framed Michael’s wife, Emily, destroying their marriage and forcing a pregnant woman into destitution. Michael found out the truth yesterday."

Sarah gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Emily... oh my god. The woman from the news a year ago? The charity scandal?"

"It was all a lie fabricated by Ashley and assisted by Victoria," Daniel said, his jaw tightening. "Michael is going to publicly expose Ashley at the gala tonight. But we need to secure the corporate assets first. Victoria Vance is currently on her way up here, expecting to take this file from you and present it as her own work to ensure her promotion to General Counsel."
